Wind Turbine Transformers Indigenized

Domestic experts have indigenized wind turbine transformers, which can save the country as much as $130 million per annum, Arsalan Fathipour, a member of Iran Electricity Industry Syndicate, said. "The giant wind transformers weigh 330 tons and can be used in the generators of highly-efficient A-Class power stations," Fathipour was quoted as saying by IRNA on Monday. "The first domestically-manufactured transformer will be installed at the Bandar Abbas Power Plant in Hormozgan Province in the near future," he added. According to the official, the electrical device will be mass-produced and exported to regional markets in Iraq, Armenia, Belarus and Kyrgyzstan. Pointing to the quality of indigenized equipment, he noted that the product conforms to international standards. "Each transformer will cost about $4 million," the official said. A transformer acts as a link between wind turbines and distribution grid. It steps up the low output voltage from the generator to higher distribution voltage level.
