Small (2MW) wind turbines have been installed as part of Binaloud wind farm development plans, in the eastern province of Khorasan Razavi, said the province’s electricity company, IRNA reported Wednesday.
Three Khorasan provinces, namely South, North, and Razavi, are designated as special renewable energy zones. Many private firms are currently active in renewable energy generation, especially in Khaaf and Binaloud regions.
Binaloud power station, located 60 km off Mashhad, is the second wind farm after Manjil site, and it has been operating for 10 years. It currently uses 43 turbines with capacity to generate 660 kilowatt to produce 28.3 MW of electricity.
Wind blows more than 300 days a year in Binaould, with a speed of more than 5-6 meters per second.
Currently, the country’s clean energy production capacity stands at 260 MW, with 300 million kWh of electricity being produced through renewables. The figure is projected to reach 400 MW by March. As stipulated in the Fifth Five-Year Economic Development Plan (2011-16), the government hopes to produce 5,000 megawatts from renewable sources within two years and plans to target rural communities who have been largely cut off from government services.
