The first production unit of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) was established by the Petrochemical Research and Technology Company, managing director of the company Esmael Ghanbari said, Shana news agency reported Sunday.
"The number of olefins production units in Iran has been on the rise over the past few years, thanks to the establishment of supplementary petrochemical industries, easy access to feedstock, and expansion of international markets," he said. "Experts have established the first semi-industrial HDPE production unit in Iran."
Bushehr petrochemical complex in southern Iran will be the first to produce HDPE with an estimated 310,000 ton annual capacity.
HDPE is a cost-effective plastic material known for its large strength to density ratio with a wide variety of applications. It is commonly used in the production of plastic bottles, corrosion-resistant piping, and plastic lumber. According to reports, the global HDPE market will reach $70 billion by 2019.
