Tehran Province Water and Wastewater Company is fully prepared to meet the rising demand for water in peak hours in the fasting month of Ramadan that started on Saturday in several Muslim countries, including Iran, the TPWWC deputy head said.
“In Ramadan, water consumption peaks at night,” Alireza Nozaripour told Mehr News Agency on Sunday, calling for judicious use of the precious and dwindling resource.
During Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, Muslims abstain from food and drink and other bodily pleasures from sunrise to sundown.
The fasting period roughly lasts 16 hours in Iran. Nozaripour stressed that the TPWWC conducts annual maintenance and repair works on Tehran water and wastewater facilities around winter, when consumption drops noticeably compared to the hot summer season.
“Fortunately, precipitation has been above expectation in the present water year (ends in September). However, it should not lead to wasteful and imprudent consumption patterns.”
According to Nozaripour, TPWWC has launched four water treatment facilities since March 2016 across Tehran Province, and three wastewater processing plants are to come on stream soon in the suburban towns of Pardis, Pishva and Islamshahr.
Regarding the major water supply project, dubbed as Tehran Water Ring, he said the project is moving slowly because of financial constraints, and called for proper funding to speed up the plan, which will help improve water supply in the ever-expanding metropolis.
Under the plan, which commenced in mid-2015, 180 kilometers of pipelines will be laid to connect seven water treatment facilities across the capital and ensure stable water quality and supply.
