The deepest well in phase one of the South Pars gas field has been drilled at a depth of 5000 meters, said the deputy managing director of National Iranian Drilling Company (NIDC).

The well is drilled vertically using NIDC fleet, in order to obtain complementary geological and seismic data on the foundations underneath, Alireza Laiji was quoted by IRNA as saying.

South Pars wells are usually drilled directionally, after 200 meters of vertical drilling. The angle is 65 degrees for deep wells, and 45 degrees for shallow ones.

A total of 57 gas wells in phases 5, 9, 10, 17, 18 of South Pars field were drilled, completed, and handed over to the relevant authorities using NIDC’s fleet.

South Pars is the world’s largest gas field, shared between Iran and Qatar, covering an area of 3,700 square kilometers of Iran’s territorial waters in the Persian Gulf. It adjoins Qatar’s North Field, which measures 6,000 square kilometers.
