Fatal Gas Pipeline Incident

Fatal Gas Pipeline Incident
Fatal Gas Pipeline Incident

A gas pipeline ruptured in the southeastern Sistan-Baluchistan Province on Monday, killing two pipeline workers, the spokesperson for the National Iranian Gas Company said. Mohammad Boujarzadeh said the incident occurred during operations to clean the pipeline, a practice known as pigging. The exact time of the incident was not known. Mehr News Agency reported. The pipeline did not contain any gas, "otherwise the scope of the incident would have been worse," a local gas official said. According to reports, a piece of equipment, known as pig or ball, ruptured the pipeline and fatally hit the workers during the cleaning process. The pig is used to clean the dregs accumulated in pipelines. A similar incident was reported last August at a 42-inch pipeline in Bushehr Province. The explosion, however, took place as gas was running inside the pipeline, resulting in a fireball that took firefighting crew nearly five hours to extinguish.
