Federica Mogherini, the European Union high representative for foreign affairs, and Ali Akbar Salehi, the head of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, discussed the July 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers.

In a meeting in Brussels on Thursday, they reaffirmed their commitment to work for the full implementation of the nuclear agreement and stressed the need to ensure that the deal meets the expectations of all parties, IRNA reported.

Mogherini and Salehi conferred about opportunities created by the deal and the importance of preparing the ground for closer interaction between Iranian business leaders and European investors.

The EU official and the Iranian nuclear chief also exchanged views on the crises gripping West Asia. They underlined the importance of a stable and secure region, and stressed the need for taking steps toward a more constructive regional environment.

The nuclear deal went into effect in January to limit Iran's nuclear work in return for the removal of EU, US and UN nuclear-related sanctions on Iran.  The UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, has repeatedly confirmed Tehran's compliance with the terms of the deal.

However, Iran complains that the other side of the deal, particularly the US, is not fully committed to its obligations.

Many international banks shy away from financing trade deals and processing Iranian transactions for fear of the remaining US penalties.

Also on Thursday, Salehi discussed banking restrictions facing Iran in a meeting with UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond in London.
