The desulfurization unit of South Pars’ phases 17 and 18 is on the verge of becoming operational, managing director of Oil Industries Engineering and Construction Company said on Sunday. Stressing that the unit is expected to go on stream over the next few weeks, Behzad Mohammadi told Shana that four gas sweetening units are operational in the phases’ refinery. The South Pars/North Dome field is the world's largest gas field, shared between Iran and Qatar, which holds an estimated 51 trillion cubic meters of in-place natural gas. Mohammadi added that the refinery's capacity stood at 36 million cubic meters a day in early May. The official expressed optimism that Phase 17 would start working by the end of the current Iranian year (ending March 20, 2017). The two phases are aimed at producing 50 million cubic meters of gas, 80,000 barrels of gas condensates and 400 tons of sulfur upon completion.
