Iran is ready to start swapping around 300 million cubic meters of natural gas per day from Russia in the north to the southern terminals in the Persian Gulf, Deputy Oil Minister Hamidreza Araqi said.

"Russia, Turkmenistan and other gas-rich countries in the north see Iran as a safe route for gas swap," he said, stressing that Iran has the infrastructure to swap Moscow's gas, IRNA  reported Tuesday. Araqi made the remarks on the heels of a closed-door meeting between oil officials and senior representatives from Russia's Rosneft in Tehran last week on swap deals for oil, gas and petrochemical products.

In October, Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh discussed developing Iran's oil and gas fields as well as swap deals in a meeting with Russia's Energy Minister Alexander Novak in Tehran.
