Iran's Research Institute of Petroleum Industry signed an agreement to design and construct four refinery units overseas, announced RIPI's deputy for downstream industries affairs.

"This is the first time Iran has become a technology developer and licensor for facilities abroad," said Mansour Bazmi without naming names, Shana reported.

This year, the institute's downstream industries department is focused on exporting downstream technology and engineering services, and the newly concluded agreement is a great stride toward that end.

The contracted project comprises designing two units for desulfurizing naphthas and octane enhancement in gasoline, a unit for desulfurizing diesel and pushing the quality up to meet Euro 5 standards, a processing unit to reduce the quantity of residual oil produced in the distillation of crude oil and to increase the yield of more valuable middle distillates.

"The project has commenced under the auspices of the institute," he said, adding that it will generate substantial revenues, over and above promoting the institute's technological stance to compete with international opponents.

The department is tasked with producing and developing the knowhow required in the downstream oil industries. It also offers consultancy services to optimize performances and remove potential bottlenecks, and offers scientific and laboratory services to pertinent industries. It mainly seeks to shift the focus of all subdivisions from individual projects to developing large and key technologies for oil, gas and petrochemical industries by taking advantage of scientific potential in local and foreign academic centers and research institutes.
