Gas sweetening at the South Pars Gas Field's Phase 13 will commence in the first quarter of the next Iranian year (starting March 20) after a new branch from the Fifth Iranian Gas Trunkline was added to the phase's refinery, director of Phase 13 said.

Payam Motamed added that the preparation of onshore refineries of phases 22-24 has been accelerated to meet the country's increasing gas demand in the cold season this year, IRNA reported on Thursday.

"The development of Phase 13 is now more than 80% complete," he said.

Phase 13 comprises onshore and offshore sections, with the priority given to the offshore section.

The official added that a second branch line has been added from the Sixth Iranian Gas Trunkline to the SP refineries.

Development of Phase 13 is carried out by a consortium of Iranian firms, including Petro Paydar Iranian Co., MAPNA Group and Sadra (Iran Marine Industrial Company), in collaboration with foreign and Iranian manufacturers and contractors.

The phase is slated to produce 50 million cubic meters of sweet gas, 80,000 barrels of gas condensate, 400 tons of sulfur, as well as annual production of 1.1 million tons of liquefied gas and 1 million tons of ethane as feedstock for petrochemical complexes.

South Pars is the world's largest gas field, shared between Iran and Qatar, covering an area of 3,700 square kilometers of Iran's territorial waters in the Persian Gulf. It adjoins Qatar’s North Field, which measures 6,000 square kilometers.
