Drilling operations in South Pars gas field Phase 13 will speed up with two new advanced drilling rigs going into operation in the next few days, project manager of Phase 13, Payam Motamed, said Sunday.

According to projections, the second super drilling rig has become operational and drilling will commence when the rig is located on Section C's jacket next week, Motamed was quoted by Shana as saying. The super rig will be utilized for drilling in 11 gas wells.

Sahar-1 drilling rig will also commence operation in the platform's Section B as of next week.

"With the increase in the number of drilling rigs from one to three, drilling will be conducted at an accelerated pace to accomplish the project as scheduled," Motamed said.

Drilling project of the phase, comprising sections A, B and C, had made 60% physical progress. Development of the Phase 13 is carried out by a consortium of Iranian firms, including Petro Paydar Iranian Co., MAPNA Group and Sadra (Iran Marine Industrial Company), in collaboration with foreign and Iranian manufacturers and contractors.

Development of Phase 13 is aimed at daily production of 50 million cubic meters of sweet gas, 80,000 barrels of gas condensate, 400 tons of sulfur, as well as annual production of 1.1 million tons of liquefied gas and 1 million tons of ethane as feedstock for petrochemical complexes.

It is expected to go into partial operation in the next Iranian year (begins March 2016).

Development of Phase 13 involves drilling 38 production wells. Drilling operations are now 50 percent complete. Phase 13 comprises onshore and offshore sections, with the priority given to the offshore part.

South Pars is the world’s largest gas field, shared between Iran and Qatar, covering an area of 3,700 square kilometers of Iran’s territorial waters in the Persian Gulf.
