Bushehr nuclear plant has generated 11 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity since it started producing electricity in 2011, said head of the nuclear facility, Hossein Derakhshandeh.

Power produced at Bushehr nuclear plant was distributed through the national network for the most part, with marginal production having been consumed for the plant's own usage, IRNA reported.

The plant, with a capacity to generate 1000 megawatt of electricity, went into initial operation in August 2011 and was connected to the national grid in September 2011. It reached its full capacity in August 2012.

Bushehr nuclear power plant was shut down on Sunday based on a previously arranged schedule.

It will remain closed for two months. This is meant to refuel the 1,000-megawatt power plant to help meet consumption for the peak period next summer. The annual refueling deadline for the plant falls in June.

Bushehr plant consists of 163 nuclear power units, 54 of which should be replaced with new ones each year.

It is located 17 kilometers southeast of the city of Bushehr, is the first civilian nuclear power project in the Middle East and operates under the full supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
