Illegal cryptocurrency mining has stolen 1.8 billion kilowatt hours (KWh) of electricity in Iran, the spokesperson of the electricity industry said.
“About 8,200 unauthorized centers for cryptocurrency mining have been identified and closed in the past three years, in which more than 246,000 active miners were using 680 megawatts of energy,” Bargh News also quoted Mostafa Rajabi-Mashhadi as saying.
“It is estimated that an additional 1,200 MW are still being used by illegal miners in the country,” he added.
Most of the theft was identified in Isfahan and Tehran provinces, followed by Khorasan Razavi, Khuzestan, Markazi, Fars and East Azarbaijan provinces.
The Energy Ministry has required owners of cryptomining hardware to register their data and the location of their devices in the Comprehensive Trade System of the Ministry of Industries, Mining and Trade.
According to the new regulations, failing to register miners’ locations or changing the location without reporting it in the system is considered a violation of rules and offenders will be fined.
By implementing strict rules against illegal activities, the government intends to help the operations of licensed crypominers.
