The level of water in dams across Iran has declined by 20% year-on-year since the beginning of the current water year (Sept. 2021), the head of Data and Information Department at Iran Water Resources Management Company said.
“Currently, dams in the country have 21.3 billion cubic meters of water while the figure was 17 bcm last year. The total capacity of dams in Iran is 50 bcm and they are now less than 45% full,” Firouz Qasemzadeh was also quoted as saying by the Energy Ministry’s news portal.
Since the start of the current water year, water outflow from dams has reached 11.3 bcm, down 2% compared with the same period of last year, he added.
The decline in precipitation in the current water year is the main factor behind the low water level in dams. This is while the spread of coronavirus has forced households to consume more water for improving hygiene.
Referring to the volume of water stored in some important dams, Qasemzadeh noted that Zayandehroud Dam in Isfahan Province, Shamil Dam in Hormozgan Province and Sefidroud Dam in Gilan Province are 12%, 28% and 96% full respectively.
Dams in Tehran Province (Taleqan, Latyan, Mamlou, Amir Kabir and Lar) and in Khuzestan Province (Karkheh and Dez) are 17% and 48% full respectively.
