Two 162-megawatt gas units of the Zarand Combined-Cycle Power Plant in Kerman Province will be connected to the network by next summer, managing director of Thermal Power Plants Holding Company said.
“The construction of the units has registered over 80% progress and they are expected to come on stream in spring,” Mohsen Tarztalab was also quoted as saying by the Energy Ministry’s news portal Paven.
A steam unit has also been programmed for the plant so that its total generation capacity will reach 484 MW, he added.
The efficiency of the new power plant will be 48%.
The construction operation of Zarand Power Plant is underway by domestic experts using the government’s financial resources.
All the main components and equipment of this complex, including turbines, generators, transformers and auxiliary equipment, are manufactured by domestic producers and companies.
The new power station seeks to increase the power generation capacity in the region and network's sustainability. It will also provide part of the demand for national electricity grid and respond to the growing need for energy consumption due to local industries and agricultural development.
Currently, the thermal power plant in Zarand is the first in southeast Iran to have been operating for half a century and one of the few that uses mazut to generate electricity. However, due to low efficiency and lack of fuel, it will soon be phased out and replaced with the new power plant.
