Bandar Abbas Refinery Continues to Indigenize Equipment

Bandar Abbas Oil Refinery in Hormozgan Province has indigenized 6,900 parts and equipment via reverse engineering, the company’s commercial deputy said.

“Annually, about 150 equipment are localized in the refinery, in cooperation with knowledge-based companies and domestic producers,” Fardin Bahrampour was also quoted as saying by the Oil Ministry’s news agency Shana.

Supporting Iranian production and local producers to help continue domestic production is one of the policies of Bandar Abbas Oil Refinery, he added.

According to Bahrampour, many of the items are important in the oil refining industry, which guarantee the continuity of refining operations.

High potentials of domestic companies have been used in manufacturing and providing equipment needed in the refinery such as heat exchanges, towers and accessories.

Power cables, instrumentation, tubes, fittings, aerial coolers and also some pumps are other main parts that have been purchased from domestic manufacturers and companies.

Reliance on scientific and technical knowhow of the refinery’s experts has helped reduce dependency on foreign countries, such that over 65% of equipment in Bandar Abbas Oil Refinery are now produced in the country.

Raising Output

The Bandar Abbas refinery has also managed to increase its output by 30,000 barrels of crude oil per day in the fiscal 2021-22 compared to last year.

The company has added 4.7 million liters a day of petroleum products to its output including 1.13 million liters of gasoline, 1.05 million liters of diesel, 2.4 million liters of mazut and 120,000 liters of LPG.

By increasing the refining capacity, the refinery seeks to reduce the sale of crude oil and improve the export of value-added goods.

Located off the Persian Gulf in southern Hormozgan Province, the refinery is one of the largest in the Middle East with a refining capacity of more than 380,000 barrels per day.

It accounts for an estimated 18% of the total petroleum products made in Iran, including gasoline, diesel, mazut, liquefied petroleum gas, kerosene, jet fuel, bitumen and sulfur.

The feed for the refinery is heavy crude and gas condensates.

The refinery also seeks to promote environment-friendly fuel and improve both the quality and quantity of its products.

It has taken measures to help improve the quality of products in compliance with Euro-4 standard. By launching a diesel hydro-treatment unit, the amount of sulfur, nitrogen and aromatic content has been reduced to acceptable levels and allows diesel refining. It helps eliminate harmful environmental effects of sulfur particles in the air.
