The completion of five wastewater treatment plants in Kermanshah Province needs over $4.8 million, managing director of the provincial Water and Wastewater Company said.
“The plants are located in Ravansar, Javanroud, Tazeh-Abad, Kerend and Sarmast cities and if the required budget is allocated, all the plants will become operational within a year,” Alireza Kakavand was also quoted as saying by the Energy Ministry’s news portal Paven.
The construction of the second phase of the wastewater treatment plant in Kermanshah City, the provincial capital, is expected to begin before the current Iranian year is out in March 2022, he added.
Currently, the first phase of the plant has come on stream and covers a population of about 330,000 people.
Kakavand noted that with the completion of the second phase, about a third of the city population will be connected to the wastewater network.
About 1.5 million people are living in Kermanshah City and the treatment plant will help preserve the city’s underground water resources and optimize wastewater for agriculture, as reclaimed wastewater is used worldwide for meeting farming needs.
Over 7.5 billion cubic meters of usable water, namely gray water, is annually produced in Iran, of which only 25% are recycled.
Gray water has already been used domestically, commercially and industrially. This includes the leftover, untreated water generated from washing machines, bathtubs and bathroom sinks.
Based on Paven data, more than 220 wastewater treatment plants are operating across Iran with an annual output of 1.2 bcm.
Currently, over 63,000 km of wastewater network are laid across the country and around 300 cities are connected to the sewerage system.
Out of the total urban population, close to 60% are now linked to the wastewater network.
