The environmental permit for the construction of two steam units at the Soltaniyeh Power Plant in Zanjan with an aggregate capacity of 320 megawatts has been issued by the Department of Environment so that the thermal power station will be turned into a combined-cycle one.
MAPNA Group will undertake the construction of two steam units, each having a nominal capacity of 160 MW, the Energy Ministry’s news portal Paven reported.
The power plant is located 25 kilometers from Zanjan in northwestern Iran. It currently has four gas units, each with a capacity of 162 MW.
The construction of the gas-fueled section of the power plant has also been carried out by MAPNA.
With the completion of steam units, the total capacity of the power plant will reach 968 MW.
Besides increasing the power generation capacity, the construction of the steam units will help increase the efficiency of the power plant and also lead to a significant saving in gas consumption.
A combined-cycle power plant uses both gas and steam turbines to produce up to 50% more electricity from the same fuel than a traditional simple cycle plant. The waste heat from the gas turbine is sent to a nearby steam turbine, which also generates electricity.
