Hormozgan Power Plants Using Indigenous Parts, Equipment

The construction of F-class gas turbines in combined-cycle power plants has been undertaken by the domestic energy and infrastructure conglomerate MAPNA

Power plants in Hormozgan Province are using indigenous parts and equipment made by domestic manufacturers, managing director of Bandar Abbas Power Generation Company said.

“The installed capacity of the southern province's power plants is currently 3,917 megawatts, which will increase to 4,224 MW with the launch of the second gas unit of Hengam Power Plant,” Mehr News Agency quoted Reza Mehrani as saying.

The first gas unit of Hengam Power Plant in Bandar Abbas, the first of its kind in the country to use an indigenized F-class gas turbine, came on stream last year.

With a capacity of 307 megawatts, it was the first of two gas units of the plant built by Iranian engineers.

The second 307 MW F-class gas turbine is under construction, along with a 292 MW steam unit. When fully operational, the power station will have a generation capacity of 906 MW.

The construction of F-class gas turbines in combined-cycle power plants has been undertaken by the domestic energy and infrastructure conglomerate MAPNA.

Twenty parts used in Bandar Abbas Power Plant have been indigenized in two months

F-class gas turbines are defined by high performance, low power generation costs, long intervals between inspections and a service-friendly design. Optimized flow and cooling add up to high efficiency and economically viable power generation in combined cycle applications.

Hengam Power Plant will have an efficiency rate of 59%, which is the highest for a plant with F-class turbines. The average efficiency of domestic power plants is around 37%. Thermal power stations account for 80% of total power generation of around 85,000 MW in Iran.

Effective steps have been taken to convert conventional plants into combined-cycle units to improve efficiency and reduce pollution and costs.

In related news, the managing director of Bandar Abbas Power Plant said 20 parts used in the power plant have been indigenized in the first two months of the current Iranian year (March 21-May 21).

Hossein Salimi added that making efforts toward self-sufficiency is one of the important priorities in the power station.

"Relying on existing potentials and using local engineers and experts, we have been able to improve the quality of repair and maintenance process and do it in the shortest possible time," he said.

Bandar Abbas Power Plant has four steam units and two gas units with a total capacity of 1,320 MW. It is the largest steam power plant in the south and southeast of the country.

Many parts needed in the plant are manufactured by experts and engineers based on local know-how and experience.

The steam units of Bandar Abbas Power Plant were supplied by the Italian industrial equipment manufacturer GIE and in the past, 100% of the equipment for repairing the steam units were imported.

However, in recent years, relying on the potentials of the domestic manufacturers, the need to supply foreign parts in the power plant has decreased to 10% and in the near future all the necessary equipment will be built inside the country.
