5,000 Tons of Chlorine, Derivatives Exported to Europe in 5 Months

Nirou Chlor Company, a subsidiary of Tamin Petroleum and Petrochemical Investment Company, exported 5,000 tons of chemicals to Europe since the beginning of the current year (March 20) despite the coronavirus pandemic, the managing director said.

“Despite the fact that the world is affected by the coronavirus pandemic, we exported a new shipment of 1,000 tons of chlorine to Europe. The total export of Nirou Chlor Company has surpassed 4,800 tons since the start of the year,” Vahid Namnik was quoted as saying by the National Petrochemical Company news website Nipna.

Nirou Chlor is well known for producing chlorine and its derivatives including liquid chlorine (used in the treatment of drinking and pool water; in paper and textile industry, and production of PVC), calcium hypochlorite (used for disinfection of drinking and pool water, disinfection of hospitals, and production of bleach), caustic soda (used in producing aluminum, detergent powders and dishwashing liquid), and monochloroacetic acid (used in cosmetics industry, and production of betadine as amphoteric detergent in shampoos) among others.

The company is the sole holder of green industry certificate in Iran’s chloralkali industry. The chloralkali is an industrial process for the electrolysis of sodium chloride solutions. It is the technology used to produce chlorine and sodium hydroxide required routinely by the industry.

“Chloralkali industry is one of the most important and strategic industries for any country. Since all products of this industry are used as raw materials in many other industries, we have never neglected the domestic market and have given priority to meeting the needs of the local market,” Namnik said.

Another issue that makes this industry important is the use of chlorine and some other products in water and wastewater industry and disinfection of potable water. Nirou Chlor Company has met a large part of the country's needs in this field.
