A fire broke out at Shahid Medhaj thermal power plant (Zargan) in southwestern Khuzestan Province late Saturday, a spokesman for the Energy Ministry said.
“The blaze, which exploded a transformer in the (privately-run) power station in Ahvaz, was contained by firefighters, and electricity was restored after partial outage,” Mostafa Rajabi Mashhadi told the semiofficial news agency Tasnim on Sunday.
No fatalities were reported.
Zargan power plant is located in 5 km off Ahvaz-Masjed Soleyman Road and stretches over 45 hectares. It produces 418 megawatts per day.
The plant has two steam units with 145 MW capacity each, and 4 gas units with the capacity of 32 MW each.
“The gas units are out of service due to the fire.”
The plant plays a vital role in network stability and voltage control in the oil-rich Khuzestan Province. Zargan Power Plant was purchased from the government in 2005 by Saba Power and Energy Group.
There have been several other incidents at facilities across the country recently.
In related news, ILNA added that a chlorine gas leak occurred at a unit of the Karoun petrochemicals plant near the port of Bandar Imam Khomeini on the Persian Gulf on Saturday, injuring dozens.
"In this incident, 70 workers who were near the unit suffered slight injuries (due to chlorine inhalation) and were taken to a hospital," the plant's spokesman, Masood Shabanlou, noted, adding that all but two had been released.
