To assist power supply during the hot summer, production of distributed generation (DG) power plants has increased 21% compared to last year.
Electricity production generated with the help of DG systems has risen by 167 MW over the last 12 months and reached 800 megawatts.
DG or on-site generation (OSG) is electricity produced in small quantities near the point of use, as alternative or supplement to traditional centralized grid-connected power. 
It reduces the cost and complexity associated with transmission and distribution, while helping offset peak electricity demand and stabilizes the national grid. Most small-scale units in Iran are powered by diesel.
As the Energy Ministry's plan is to put an end to building costly and conventional power plants with astronomical, constructing distributed generation plants is now become a priority.
Several small-scale power plants with DG system joined the national grid in some provinces (in 2019) namely Kerman, Zanjan, Yazd and Khuzestan.
Of the total DG capacity (800 MW), close to 200 MW is produced in Zanjan which has more than 20 OSGs. Yazd produces 30 MW with five small-scale power plants.
According to Iran Power Generation, Distribution and Transmission Company (Tavanir), power consumption exceeded by 56 gigawatts on June 14, up 3,200 MW compared to the same day last year. 
With higher temperatures projected for the coming weeks, this already high consumption (56 GW) means that power cuts would be unavoidable. In 2019, summer network load hit a record high of 57,500 MW and is projected to reach 60GW this summer.
