Household Gas Consumption in Iran Jumps 40%

Household gas consumption reached 530 million cubic meters a day over the first 10 days (Dec. 22 – Dec. 31, 2019), dispatching director of National Iranian Gas Company said.
Mehdi Jamshidi Dana said households (in the 10 days) used 160 mcm/d more gas than the corresponding period of 2018, when daily consumption was 370 mcm, ILNA reported.
“Consumption has soared 40% compared to the same time last year,” he noted, adding that the cold spell in some parts of the country in recent days pushed up household consumption.
The number of gas consumers increased 4% in 2019, which cannot have a serious impact on consumption levels, he opined.
Almost all households in cities and close to 80% of rural folks are linked to the national grid. Domestic gas consumption has been rising constantly in the cold seasons.
“The national gas transmission network is secure and supplies to all sectors continue uninterrupted.” 
Iran holds the world’s second largest gas reserves after Russia. According to BP Statistical Review of World Energy, Iran has 34 trillion cubic meters of natural gas reserves or 18% of the world’s proven reserves.
Domestic gas output has reached 850 million cubic meters a day, a major part of which (610 mcm/d) comes from the South Pars Gas Field in the Persian Gulf.
South Pars is the world’s largest gas field near the joint border between Iran and Qatar, covering an area of 3,700 square kilometers of Iran's territorial waters off the Persian Gulf.
