Since the beginning of the year (March), 10 oil tankers were repaired in Bandar Abbas Ship Repair Yard (in southern Hormuzgan Province) and work continues on two others, managing director of the National Iranian Tanker Company said.
“We have not sent any tanker overseas for repairs and all the maintenance work has been done by Iranian engineers and technicians,” Mehr News Agency quoted Nasrollah Sardashti as saying.
Eight more tankers will be repaired in the next five months.
Regarding the recently damaged oil tanker, he said it is under repair.
The Iranian tanker Sabiti was damage when it was hit by missiles 97 kilometers from the Saudi port city of Jeddah in October.
Sardashti said the NITC has no plans to buy new oil tankers.
A subsidiary of the National Iranian Oil Company, the NITC is one of the largest tanker companies in the world with a fleet of 69 tankers, including 42 VLCCs. The fleet’s average age is 10 years and has a total capacity of 15.5 million tons.
