Mashhad’s Academic Center for Education, Culture and Research (ACECR) is to host Iran’s Third International Stem Cell Conference, April 19-21, 2017.

Ali Akbar Hashemian, director of the event, told IRNA that scientists from the US, China, Germany, Turkey, Malaysia, and Pakistan have registered for the event that  will focus on gene therapy, cell therapy, and regenerative medicine.

The previous round of the conference was held at Ferdowsi University in Mashhad in collaboration with ACECR-Mashhad and Royan Institute. That gathering reviewed progress in the application of gene therapy.

Hashemian said one of the primary goals this time is to help boost research with  emphasis on applied sciences.

In recent years gene therapy and ethical issues in gene therapy and genetic engineering and their legal constraints have been in the spotlight in Iran.

Earlier in November the fourth International Congress of Medical Ethics and Laws in Gene Therapy was held in Yazd by Tehran’s Medical Ethics and Law Research Center.

Gene therapy is the introduction of normal genes into cells in place of missing or defective ones to correct genetic disorders.
