The first wireless home and office broadband network (Time Division Long-Term Evolution, or TD-LTE) in Iran was launched by MTN-Irancell on Wednesday .

According to a company press release, the launch was held in the northeastern city of Mashhad in the presence of reporters and Irancell executives.

The company’s TD-LTE network was launched simultaneously in 25 cities across the country.

Irancell’s CEO Alireza Ghalambor Dezfouli noted that 1,038 areas in the country, including 527 cities, have access to Irancell’s 3G network and 239 areas currently have 4G coverage.

He added that Irancell currently has 17 million and 25 million broadband and data subscribers respectively, adding that the company plans to expand TD-LTE services to remaining provinces in the coming weeks.

TD-LTE is the last generation of fixed broadband for homes and offices. Using this technology, users experience a more stable rate in uploads and downloads and a higher Internet speed compared with the former technologies such as dialup, ADSL and WiMAX. It is not limited by issues such as the need for a landline.

Irancell received the countrywide TD-LTE license on August 23, 2015. The pilot phase was launched the next day at an event attended by Minister of Communications and Information Technology Mahmoud Vaezi.
