Researchers of Iran's Royan Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Technology have reported great advancements for the treatment of children suffering from cerebral palsy and polio.
"They used cell therapy method for the treatment," said the head of research center, Hamid Gourabi.
“We conducted clinical tests on patients with cerebral palsy and obtained satisfactory results.”
Gourabi noted that after the treatment, patients, who were not capable of standing, managed to move their hands or start walking with the help of their parents, ISNA reported.
He further said Iranian researchers are also investigating the effects of cord blood on the treatment of patients with cerebral palsy, as well as the production of human organs in animals.
“The organs of some animals have been produced in small animals’ bodies. We are trying to implement the project on bigger animals,” he said.
Gourabi noted that scientists at Royan are “producing animals that cannot produce liver genetically and we can insert human stem cells into the an animal’s fetus to produce human liver”.
