An Iranian university team is qualified to attend an international robotics competition in Canada, IRNA reported on Tuesday.

Islamic Azad University of Qazvin's underwater robotics team is the only Iranian team that will be attending the competition. The team has previously won five international Robocop competitions in Iran.

The event, organized by Marine Advanced Technology Education Center (MATE) in St. John's, Canada, will take place on June 25-27. Companies such as NASA, Shell, Peugeot, General Motors and Asus among many more are the financial sponsors of the event.

The 14th annual 2015 MATE competition highlights the role of remotely operated vehicles in polar science and offshore oil and gas industry. Among 100 university teams that applied, 35 were selected to participate in the competition. Teams from the University of Arizona, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Washington, University of Hong Kong and Russia's Maritime State University are also in the competition.

The competition will be hosted by the Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland and the National Research Council's Ocean, Coastal and River Engineering facility.
