More than 83 tons of raw silk worth about $3.44 million were imported into Iran during the first five months of the current Iranian year (March 21-Aug. 22), latest data released by the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration show.

Germany was the biggest exporter with 38 tons worth $1.59 million. Other main exporters of raw silk to Iran during the period were Uzbekistan, the UAE and Spain, Mizan Online reported.

About 292 tons of raw silk worth 385.76 billion rials ($11.28 million) were imported during the last Iranian year (March 2017-18).

In an earlier interview with Financial Tribune, Ali Asghar Dadashpour, the former head of Sericulture Expansion Center with the Agriculture Ministry, said Iran is the world’s eighth biggest country in the field of sericulture, after China, India, Uzbekistan, Thailand, Brazil, Vietnam and North Korea.

Gilan Province in northern Iran accounts for half of raw silk cocoon production. Other sericulture hubs include Mazandaran, Golestan, Khorasan Razavi, North and South Khorasan, East Azarbaijan and Isfahan.
