About 5.9 million tons of different essential commodities were imported to the country during the first nine months of the current year, Deputy Minister of Agriculture Ali Ghanbari said on Sunday. “The imported items include wheat, rice, oil and sugar,” he was quoted by ISNA as saying. “While wheat accounts for 90% of the country’s total imports of essential commodities, oil, sugar, and rice respectively account for 5%, 4% and 1% of the country’s total imports of such commodities,” he said. He added that out of the 5.2 million tons of imported wheat, four million tons have been directly imported by the government and the rest by the private sector.
