The construction of the 75-kilometer Hamedan-Malayer Railroad in northwestern Iran was launched on Thursday in a ceremony attended by Minister of Roads and Urban Development Abbas Akhoundi.
“Hamedan-Malayer Railroad will be built in two sections. The first is 41.5 kilometers long and will cost about 689 billion rials (more than $15 million) and the second section is 33.5 kilometers long,” Kheirollah Khademi, deputy minister and chief executive of Iran’s Transportation Infrastructure Construction and Development Company, affiliated to the Roads Ministry, said on the sidelines of the groundbreaking ceremony.
Khademi added that the route will continue from Malayer to Kangavar, Sahneh, Kermanshah, Eslamabad-e-Gharb, Gilan-e-Gharb and Qasr-e-Shirin to reach Khosravi border crossing in the Iranian territory.
From there, the railroad will be connected to Khanaqin, Baghdad and Mosul in Iraq and continues through Qamishli, Deir ez-Zor, Raqqa, Aleppo and Latakia Port in Syria before reaching the Mediterranean Sea, the company’s news portal reported.
According to Khademi, more than 3,400 kilometers of rail projects are under construction across the country.
