IMIDRO’s Report on Downstream, Upstream Steel Sectors

A total of 38.34 million tons of iron ore concentrate was produced in Iran in the last fiscal year (ended March 20, 2018), to register an 18% growth compared to the year before.

According to the Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization’s latest report, Gologhar Mining and Industrial Complex accounted for 14.24 million tons of the total output, followed by Chadormalu Mining and Industrial Complex with 8.54 million tons, Iran Central Iron Ore Company with 4.94 tons, Middle East Mines and Mining Industries Development Holding Company with 4.4 million tons, Goharzamin Iron Ore Company with 4.1 million tons and Opal Parsian Sangan with 2.1 million tons.

Production of granulated iron during the same period stood at 6.61 million tons, up 11% year-on-year.

Pellet output hit 31.35 million tons, up 22% YOY. Golgohar was the largest producer with 11 million tons, followed by Mobarakeh Steel Company with 7.3 million tons, Khouzestan Steel Company with 6.15 million tons, Chadormalu with 3.47 million tons and MIDHCO with 3.41 million tons.

The production of direct-reduced iron stood at 18.96 million tons, up 14% YOY. Mobarakeh had the lion’s share with 7.32 million tons, followed by Khouzestan Steel Company with 3.99 million tons, South Kaveh Steel Company with 1.58 million tons, Hormozgan Steel Company with 1.5 million tons, Khorasan Steel Company with 1.24 million tons, Saba Steel Complex with 1.12 million tons, Ghadir Iron and Steel Company with 811,549 tons, MIDHCO with 761,857 tons, Sefiddasht Steel Complex with 480,319 tons and Esfahan Steel Company with 133,875 tons.

From the above raw material, a total of 17.25 million tons of slab, bloom, billet and ingot were produced during the period, marking a rise of 20% YOY. 

Mobarakeh Steel Company, with its subsidiaries Saba and Hormozgan Steel, was the biggest producer here with 8.66 million tons. Khouzestan Steel Company came next with 3.76 million tons, followed by ESCO with 2.27 million tons, Khorasan Steel Company with 847,463 tons, South Kaveh Steel Company with 825,976 tons, Chadormalu with 428,661 tons, Iran Alloy Steel Company with 397,811 tons and Iran National Steel Industries Group with 42,573 tons.

All producers posted growth for the period, with the exception of INSIG and IASCO whose output dropped 57% and 1%

A total of 10.58 million tons of finished steel products, including hot and cold-rolled coils, rebar, beams, pipes, wide and galvanized sheets, were produced last year, up 5% YOY. 

MSC and its subsidiary Saba Steel had the largest share of production with 6 million tons, followed by ESCO with 2.18 million tons, Oxin Steel Company with 710,525 tons, Khorasan Steel Company with 529,839 tons, Ahwaz Rolling and Pipe Mills Company with 297,539 tons, IASCO with 275,309 tons, Azarbaijan Steel Company with 256,554 tons, Chaharmahal-Bakhtiari Automotive Sheet Company with 210,175 tons and INSIG with 116,319 tons.
