About 43.72 billion cigarettes were produced in Iran during the first 11 months of the current fiscal year (March 21, 2017-Feb. 19), registering an 8% rise compared with last year’s corresponding period, according to the chairman of Iranian Tobacco Planning and Supervision Center. “More than 340 million cigarettes were exported during the period, indicating a 127% hike year-on-year,” Ali-Asghar Ramzi was also quoted by ISNA as saying. Imports experienced a 28% decline YOY to stand at 2.78 billion during the period. Ramzi estimated that 4.25 billion cigarettes were smuggled into the country from March 21, 2017, to Feb. 19, 2018, indicating a 29% decrease YOY. According to the official, domestic cigarette production meets more than 90% of demand in Iran, as Iranians annually consume close to 55 billion cigarettes.
