Iran produced a record high of 8 million tons of sugarbeet in the current Iranian year (ends March 20), the executive of the Ministry of Agriculture’s so-called Sugarbeet and Sugar Project announced.
“With 2 million tons, West Azarbaijan Province was the biggest producer of sugarbeet in the country,” Alireza Yazdani added.
In the last Iranian year (ended March 20, 2017), 105,000 hectares went under sugarbeet cultivation.
Some 1.65 million tons of sugar were produced in Iran last year and this year’s output is projected to reach 1.7 million tons.
According to Bahman Danaei, secretary of Iran Guild Union for Sugar and Sugar Cube Factories, Iran is able to meet 75% of its demand for sugar through domestic production.
