A first-of-its-kind advanced X-ray machine, capable of scanning 120 containers per hour, has been installed in Iran’s Shahid Rajaee Port in the southern Hormozgan Province at a cost of 320 billion rials ($6.74 million) in the presence of Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli.

This and other X-ray machines installed at Iranian ports are for the purpose of preventing smuggling of goods, as containers may not be opened by customs authorities as per international law.

The strategic port, which is Iran’s biggest container port near the Strait of Hormuz, accounted for some 60% of all Iranian port activities last year (March 2016-17), the news portal of the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development reported on Wednesday.

On average, about 2,000 containers enter Shahid Rajaei Port every day. Some 44 million tons of goods worth $11.14 billion were exported from and nearly 10 million tons worth $18.65 billion were imported to Iran via Shahid Rajaei Port in the last Iranian year (ended March 20, 2017), registering a 44% and 12% rise in tonnage and value respectively year-on-year.

Some 5 million tons of cargos were transshipped at the port over the period.

The strategic port earned over 122 trillion rials ($2.6 billion) in revenues last year.
