Iran is planning to expand its railway network by adding 10,000 kilometers of railroads in the coming years, the deputy minister of Roads of Urban Development, Ali Nourzad, said on Friday. “The government has 8 important railway projects,” ISNA quoted Nourzad as saying, adding that the government is trying to increase railways’ share in national trade. He also said that currently 4,800 km of railroads are under construction by the government. “Studies are underway to construct a further 4,700km in the coming year.” Iran is trying to increase its domestic and foreign trade by improving rail transportation. The Iran-Turkmen-Kazakh railroad known as the North-South Transnational Corridor, which was recently inaugurated, is expected to help boost trade between the three neighboring countries.
