The production of olive oil is estimated to reach 3,000-3,500 tons in Iran by the end of the current fiscal year (March 20), registering a 33% decline compared with last year’s, the head of the so-called “Olive Project” undertaken by the Ministry of Agriculture said.

Ahmad Mostakhdemi added that the reason for the decline is losses caused by the frost in December 2016 and the heat wave in March and April 2017, IRNA reported.

“We predict that close to 85,000 tons of olives will be produced from 55,000 hectares of orchards across the country. Last year, 96,000 tons were produced, 60-65% of which were used to make olive conserves. Olive oil was extracted from the rest,” he said.

Mostakhdemi noted that domestic demand for olive oil stands at 11,500-12,000 tons per year.

In Iran, olives are mainly cultivated in Zanjan, Qazvin and Gilan provinces.
