Plans are underway to turn the Birjand Special Economic Zone (SEZ) into an attractive destination for foreign and domestic investors, Secretary of Free Zones High Council, Akbar Torkan, said on Thursday.
“Birjand SEZ will come into operation when at least one manufacturing unit with a minimum of five employees starts operation there,” he said during a visit to the zone. So far the zone has been used as a trade hub only.
Birjand Special Economic Zone, which is comprised of two separate parts, is located on the outskirts of the city of Birjand, a city in the northeastern part of Iran.
Meanwhile, Morteza Safdarizadeh, the managing director of the zone, has said that “necessary infrastructure has been developed in the first part of the zone with the aim of attracting potential investors.”
He added that the second part of the zone, built in an area of about 100 hectares on Iran-Afghanistan border, can further facilitate trade between the two countries without a need for consular formalities.
