Close to 1,000 tons of gelatin worth more than 197.6 billion rials ($6.1 million) were imported in the five months to Aug. 22, figures released by the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration show.

France with over $2.8 million was the biggest exporter of gelatin to Iran followed by Colombia, the UAE, China, South Korea, Italy, Brazil, Turkey, Germany, Pakistan, Thailand and India, Young Journalists Club reported.

Gelatin is a translucent, colorless, brittle, flavorless food derived from collagen obtained from animal body parts. It is commonly used as a gelling agent in food, pharmaceutical, vitamin capsule, photography and cosmetic manufacturing.
