In the first eight months of the current year (March 21-Novemeber 21), 5.11 million tons of wheat were imported to the country, registering a 154 percent growth compared to last year, ECO News reported on Sunday. Based on a report released by the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA), wheat import stood at 2.11 million tons in same period last year. While the administration was expected to reduce the imports of strategic goods, it fell short of curbing the import of wheat due to severe drought in the recent years.
