With the daily import of between 60 and 70 tons of red meat alongside domestic production, there is enough of the product to meet domestic demand during the months of Muharram and Safar (the first two months of the Islamic calendar that starts on Sept. 22), the head of Tehran Guild Union for Lamb Meat Supply and Distribution, Ali Asghar Maleki, said.

Every year, demand for red meat in Iran and many other Muslim countries increases during the period, as they offer votive food as part of the Islamic culture.

Currently, 10% of domestic demand for red meat are met by imports, which annually averages at 80,000-100,000 tons.

Nomads account for more than a quarter of Iran’s red meat production.

Meat imports strictly based on halal standards are made from Brazil, Australia, Armenia and Georgia.
