Minister of Roads and Urban Development Abbas Akhoundi attended a meeting with Oman’s Minister of Transport and Communications Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Salem Al-Futaisi and his Qatari counterpart, Jassim bin Saif Al Sulaiti, in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday.

The three ministers discussed the future of economic cooperation in transportation, tourism and trade, and stressed the importance of detailed planning in this regard, the Iranian ministry’s news portal reported.

Akhoundi also met with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on his daylong visit to the neighboring country and attended the opening ceremony of Qatar’s new Hamad Port.

Hamad Port will have an annual capacity of 7.5 million shipping containers. It features separate terminals dedicated to general cargo, cereals, vehicles and livestock.

Located in the town of Mesaieed, the port is the largest of its kind in the Middle East with the capacity to receive all types of ships and vessels. It is expected to become fully operational by 2020, when it will cover around 20 square kilometers.
