The government plans to recruit 30,000 people in state-run executive bodies during the current Iranian year (started March 21).

As many as 400,000 people participated in the state employment test held earlier this month. Out of these, only 12,000 will make it to the final list of recruits, the head of Administrative and State Recruitment Organization, Jamshid Ansari, told Mehr News Agency.

“Another test will be held in autumn (starting on September 23), which will lead to the recruitment of another 14,000 people,” he added.

According to Ansari, the remaining 4,000 will be hired through separate tests organized by various state-run bodies, including the Oil Ministry.

“Currently, the Iranian government employs about 2.35 million people,” he said. “Last year, about 10,000 people exited the government’s active workforce, through retirement or otherwise.”

While over-manning in state-run bodies has been a subject of criticism for creating an unnecessary burden on the government’s budget, Ansari said there is a shortage of employees in underdeveloped regions.

“It is true that we have a surplus of about 15-20% in the number of state employees in large cities, but we still have a deficit in less developed areas,” he said.

According to the official, the imbalance in the number of state employees across the country is a result of the unregulated transfer of personnel between cities and provinces.

“The new recruits will fill up the vacancies created as a result of retirements, transfer of personnel from one region to another, as well as the new vacancies created in the government’s previous term,” he said.

Among these new vacancies, Ansari referred to those created in the health sector after new hospitals were founded during the first tenure of President Rouhani’s government.

The proposed state employment in the current Iranian year constitutes only 3% of the government’s ambitious target to create nearly a million new jobs before the end of the current Iranian year in March 2018.

Alaeddin Azvaji, an official with the Ministry of Cooperatives, Labor and Social Welfare, said his ministry plans to create 971,700 new jobs this year.
