Average daily rail freight transportation has hit a record high of 84 million tons per kilometer, the deputy head of Islamic Republic of Iran Railways said. Ton-kilometer is a unit of freight carriage equal to the transportation of one metric ton of freight over 1 kilometer. “The average ton-kilometer transportation this [fiscal] year (started March 21) has grown 7% compared to the year before,” Ebrahim Mohammadi was also quoted as saying by IRNA. According to CEO of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways Saeed Mohammadzadeh, the share of railroad in cargo transportation in Iran stood at 10% in the fiscal 2013-14, which is currently 12%. Iran’s Sixth Five-Year Development Plan (2017-22) stipulates that the share should reach 30% by 2022.
