A railroad connecting the Iranian Caspian port city of Astara to an Azerbaijani city with the same name will become operational in six months, the deputy head of Islamic Republic of Iran Railways said.

“The first cargo will be shipped through multimodal transportation,” Nourollah Biranvand was also quoted as saying by ILNA in a meeting with Azerbaijan’s rail authorities in Tehran on Wednesday.

Azerbaijan has agreed to invest $60 million in the project. It is part of the so-called International North-South Transport Corridor to carry cargo from India to Europe and vice versa, through Iran, Azerbaijan and Russia.
