Iran Fisheries Organization expects trout exports to reach 30,000 tons in the current fiscal year (March 2017-18) to register a 200% increase compared with last year.
According to chairman of the organization, Hassan Salehi, trout exports were under 2,000 tons per year before the removal of sanctions. “After the lifting of sanctions, trade was facilitated and new technologies entered the country, which resulted in the export of some 10,000 tons of the fish last year,” he was quoted as saying by Mehr News Agency.
International sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program were lifted in January 2016 as part of a deal the country signed with world powers a year earlier.
Salehi noted that last year 1.1 million tons of seafood were produced in Iran, of which 110,000 tons worth $412 million were exported.
