Iran produced some 81,500 tons of honey in the last fiscal year (March 2016-17), registering a 9.1% increase compared to the fiscal 2013-14, a deputy agriculture minister said.
Hassan Rokni added that production is expected to rise 5.5% this year compared to last year to reach 86,000 tons, IRNA reported. Per capita honey consumption in Iran stands at about 1 kg while the global annual average is between 250 and 300 grams.Abdolreza Bigonah, the head of the National Association of Beekeepers and Honey Producers of Iran, said the local production of honey is sufficient to meet domestic demand.
About 75,000 people are active in Iran’s beekeeping industry.
