Bottled Water Consumption in Iran Meager

Each Iranian consumes 15-20 liters of bottled water per year on average, considerably low compared with the neighboring countries.

In Turkey, for instance, per capita consumption stands at 130 liters, according to a report recently published by Financial Tribune’s sister newspaper Donya-e-Eqtesad in a pamphlet on Iran’s food industry.

The figure stands at 100 liters in the Persian Gulf countries, the report added, noting that Mexico has the highest consumption rate in the world with over 244 liters a year.

According to Secretary of Iran’s Bottled Water Association Peyman Forouhar, the low rate of bottled water consumption in Iran is because 95% of the population have access to cheap drinkable tap water.

“What’s more, the not-so-good economic status of medium-income people in the country is another issue,” he said.

Forouhar added that about 1-1.5 billion liters of bottled water are produced in Iran every year.

The bottled water industry is considered a lucrative business worldwide. In 2015, its market value was estimated at $170 billion and it is predicted to have a 9.5% growth by 2022, reaching over $319 billion.
