Imported goods without the labelImported goods without the label of Global Trade Item Number will be treated as of Global Trade Item Number will be treated as contraband, a deputy minister of industries, mining and trade announced in the ceremony for unveiling the GTIN database at the ministry’s headquarters on Tuesday.  “Those active in import business need to acquire GTIN, or if the item does not have the code, they need to purchase one by referring to ntsw.ir,” IRNA also quoted Yadollah Sadeqi as saying.  GTIN is an 8, 12, 13 or 14-digit identifier for trade items, developed by Global Standards 1. Such identifiers are used to look up product information in a database (often by entering the number through a barcode scanner pointed at an actual product) which may belong to a retailer, manufacturer, collector, researcher or any other entity.  The uniqueness and universality of the identifier is useful in establishing which product in one database corresponds to which product in another database, especially across organizational boundaries.
